Climate Ride will return for its fourth year this May 19-23, 2012, and will once again see hundreds of cyclists pedal beautiful country roads 300 miles from New York City to Washington, DC to raise awareness of sustainability, renewable energy climate issues, and bicycle advocacy. This "green conference on wheels" and fully-supported adventure raises funds for more than 30 non-profits including NRDC, Green America, 350.org, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Washington Area Bicyclist Coalition, 1Sky, and more.
Climate Ride is the first multi-day, multi-city charitable bicycle ride to address climate change and renewable energy issues. The event also endeavors to showcase the bicycle as the ultimate carbon-free machine and a viable form of transportation. Climate Ride will return to California next September 2012.

MORE: The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.
The American Cancer Society has partnered with Over the Edge to bring people the opportunity to rappel down a skyscraper right in the heart of the city! Participants sign up, raise funds that benefit the American Cancer Society, and show up on rappel day. Anyone between 110-300 pounds can rappel, with no previous climbing or rappelling experience needed.
We are also looking for committee members. Committee members will attend a brief meeting once a month, beginning in November, and assist with sponsorship, marketing recruitment, and PR efforts.

MORE: CureSearch for Children's Cancer is a national non-profit foundation dedicated to finding a cure for children's cancer by funding research. CureSearch supports the Children's Oncology Group (COG), the world's largest children's cancer research collaborative. The COG has played a role in nearly every children's cancer breakthrough in recent history. By supporting the COG at more than 178 hospitals nationwide, treatment is available in children's hometowns, not just at certain cancer hospitals.
CureSearch is pleased to announce a partnership with Kick-It: a national fundraising program that started with a 10-year old cancer patient with a big dream of curing cancer by playing kickball. The concept has spread across the country and thousands of people have been inspired to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Coaches teach softball and inspire youth to recognize their potential and realize their dreams.
There are powerful emotional rewards gained from the Harlem RBI coaching experience. Harlem RBI volunteer coaches can have a direct and noticeable impact on the positive development of the youth they coach. Also, many volunteer coaches have formed rewarding relationships with both players and fellow coaches.
Time commitment varies according to youth age group. Practices typically last two hours and games last between 2-5 hours. The coaching staff of a Harlem RBI team consists of up to six adult volunteers: a manager, assistant manager and four coaches. Coaches must attend at least 75% of team activities.
Teams practice on fields in East Harlem . Games for older youth take place around New York City (transportation is provided to away games).

MORE: St. Jude School is looking for volunteers to become a mentor for students in grade levels 4-8. Mentors and students meet one Saturday per month at the host school from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. during the academic year. At the start of the program, students and mentors are divided into four teams (i.e. Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green). A typical session consists of 4 structured activities followed by a pizza lunch: Team-Building Game (i.e. icebreaker), Educational Workshop (i.e. Jeopardy), Hands-on Project to Reinforce Workshop (i.e. Arts & Crafts - such as making team banners or decorating t-shirts) and an Organized Athletic Activity (i.e. dodgeball). All activities are organized and led by volunteer mentors. Occasionally, field trips are utilized to expose the children to NYC's abundance of cultural resources (i.e. American Museum of Natural History or Sony Wonder Technology Lab).
Super Saturdays Mentoring Program's mission is to expand the limited resources of struggling schools to better serve their students. In collaboration with the principals and teachers, our mentors are positive role models who help students develop life skills, build self-esteem, and expand their cultural horizons in a safe, caring environment at a time when these youths would normally be confined at home watching TV or playing video games - usually alone. Not only do you get a chance to become a mentor, but it is a great way to meet and network with the other mentors as well.

Top Honors provides free math tutoring to motivated 6th through 8th-graders from the Upper West Side and Harlem. Top Honors' program is primarily staffed by volunteer tutors. Top Honors' unique and structured back-to-basics curriculum focuses on math concepts, word problems, and real-life examples, and incorporates many competitive mathematics-driven games that motivate students to learn. Top Honors' has produced educational gains on internal assessments of over 40% in each of the last 5 years.
Tutor candidates should be professionals or advanced high school students who are comfortable with mathematics (through basic algebra) and enjoy working with students. Mentors
Each student is paired with two mentors with whom they meet weekly throughout the school year to work on essays, summer prep program selection, and college/university selection. In larger chapters, each Mentor/Mentee triad is placed with other triads to form a Team, which has a designated Team Leader. Mentors are role models and mentor not only their Student but also all of the Students on their team; they assist the Team Leader in building team cohesion, implementing the curriculum, and keeping the team on track.
Test Prep Instructors
Test Prep Instructors are trained to guide students through a structured weekly curriculum that helps evaluate students' PSAT and SAT scores. Test Prep SAT sessions take place weekly from November through May while Test Prep PSAT sessions take place weekly from February through May.
Writing & Critical Thinking Consultants
Typical Writing & Critical Thinking Consultants have a professional or academic (graduate or above) focus in writing. Each volunteer is grouped with students in a structured program to help take the students' writing skills from the basic to the intermediate and advanced levels. In addition to meeting with sophomores on a weekly basis, these volunteers also review weekly essay assignments and participate in the review of summer program and college applications for students in the Junior and Senior Programs.

MORE: Year Up's mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education. Year Up's students are ages 18-24 and have a high school diploma or GED, but are otherwise disconnected from the economic mainstream. During five months of full-time classes at Year Up's NYC office, the students learn the technical skills and the attitude, behavior, and communication practices that allow them to succeed in entry-level corporate positions without a college degree. During the second six months, students intern full-time at leading corporations, where they earn a stipend tied to their performance as well as up to 16 college credits from Pace University.
What Makes a Great Year Up Mentor:

Has a B.A., has work experience and is familiar with entry-level positions
